You know those tasks around the home that once you’ve done them you wish you’d done it years ago? Creating attic storage into our roof cavity falls squarely into that category.

I’d seen attic ladders in friends’ homes, and in homes that I’d inspected for sale. But I’d never investigated further. I thought they would be a) too small to be useful and b) too expensive to be worthwhile.

Well I was proved very wrong.

Having ours installed has changed the game. I was able to move the excessive amount of ‘stuff’ out of our laundry – which was the only storage space in our single fronted weatherboard. It’s all that stuff around the house that gets very little use during the year such as Christmas decorations, suitcases (don’t get to use them enough these days!), and winter clothes. Even the kids toys that I’ve become better at putting them on rotation to keep them interesting.

We engaged The Attic Guys for the job and we are super happy with the outcome. They converted 12 m2 of our roof cavity into dustproof storage. Imagine the appearance of a white bubble wrapped room and you’d be envisaging our attic. At the end of this closed in space is a little door (a bit Willy Wonker style) which opens up to the remainder of the roof space in which we have timber sheet flooring laid so we can also use this space as additional storage (albeit not dust proof). We also had fan ventilation and a light included which makes it so practical.

It’s a little bit of a daunting task, climbing the aluminium ladder up to our 3m high ceiling, so I do suggest that if you do have one installed, try to make sure someone else is home to ‘have your back’. You can’t be too safe.

The total cost for the job was $5,000 and worth every penny. I can’t recommend highly enough investigating this option in your home. There might not be enough roof height for it to be possible in all homes, but it’s worth a call to The Attic Guys to investigate none the less.
